The project was to choose any one building from Broughton Street in Savannah, GA, and turn into a themed business. There was no budget limit, nor did you have to follow the Historic Society's strict regulations for building exteriors in the Historic Downtown of Savannah. You still had to think about the potential of the business and why it would make sense for it to be where it is. I addressed an area that, even though is very present in downtown, has no main building for it. Savannah is the most haunted city in the country, and people love that.

I chose to redesign the building at 217 East Broughton Street. It currently looks like this.

Savannah has a rich history involving hauntings and plenty is done to show it off. However, there is no place that goes into detail on why all these ghosts seem to have stayed here. To explore this market I came up with The House of Drums and Shadows. The aim of the building is to explore a bit more of Savannah's root doctoring history while providing alternative entertainment to those downtown.

The building is divided into 4 areas: Main floor retail and sitting, Basement food and beverage, 2nd floor visual displays and 3rd floor live theater area.

The 1st/main floor is tnriely dedicated to retail, with plenty souvenirs for tourists to get. The graveyard next door can be seen from the store, but not accessed. People can head upstairs to the second floor via the main stairs or elevator in the back. Stairs to the basement are hidden behind a large indoor tree.

Basement area is a bar/cafe area themed to look like the building owners started digging under the graveyard next door. There are stairs to get up to the graveyard so that it appears people are coming out of a crypt at street level. Glass columns would show strata of dirt with many treasures buried within, such as caskets and bones.

The 2nd floor would be a permanent visual display of the different deities and intermediaries Voodoo practitioners and root doctors seek favor from.
